Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai would have turned 73 yesterday. We remember her with joy and respect, as a distinguished lady. She was a lady of firsts – first East African lady to earn a doctorate degree; the first African lady to win a Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the Green Belt Movement. Ms. Maathai defended the wanton destruction of land against a former Kenyan President and simultaneously fought for the recognition and contribution of African women.
Lest we forget Wangari Maathai for her work in defence of our environment and our women. We pray that God would give us women leaders to take up her place and passion. May God continue to ignite my passion for wildlife and the environment, so that I may do my part, just like Wangari’s fable on the hummingbird!
